8 Tips to Take Care of the Caregiver
By Cheryl Mathieu, Ph.D., M.S.W.

Are you caring for an older loved one? Remember that your own health is a priority. AgingPro’s motto: Take care of yourself so you can help take care of others. These eight tips will help you be at your optimal health, so you can be at your best.

  1. REST
Take time to rest, and get plenty of sleep.

  2. EAT
Now is a good time to eat healthy foods that work well for your body, so you have the stamina and energy to cope with the extra demands. Remember to eat regular meals throughout the day and drink plenty of water.

  3. MOVE
Physical activity helps relieve stress and tension. Do fun things that keep you moving – jog, swim, bike, walk, play tennis.

  4. ASK
Ask for assistance. Reach out to friends and loved ones for support. Caregivers are usually the last ones to ask for help. Now is a good time to practice. Loved ones usually will be very happy to help.

  5. LAUGH
Now is a good time to retain and increase your sense of humor. Seeing the lighter side of a situation can relieve stress and be fun!

  6. BE NICE TO YOU
Find nice things to do for yourself. Maybe it’s a massage or a pedicure, calling a friend or spending time on your favorite hobby - anything you enjoy! Take your vitamins and medications, get regular check-ups

  7. CONNECT
Connect with friends and loved ones. Social support is an important aspect to health promotion. Consider joining a caregiver support group.

  8. MEDITATE
Prayer and meditation are great methods to focus on what’s important, find meaning, and rejuvenate. Take some quiet time, even five minutes, to be with yourself and God – whatever that is for you.
