My great-grandfather had it and two of her sons - one of them is my grandfather - have Alzheimer's. I'm worried that my dad and my siblings may inherit it. Is this disease genetic?

Researchers do not know the exact cause of Alzheimer's disease, but it is most likely due to a combination of a variety of genetic and other factors. Genetic research is concentrating on the role of heredity -- the transmission of qualities and illnesses from parents to children -- in determining risk for, and development of, Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's genes are genes that make you more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease. Genes control the function of every cell in your body. Some genes determine basic characteristics, such as the color of your eyes and hair. Other genes can make you more likely to develop certain diseases — including Alzheimer's.

Yes! Genes do play some role in the development of Alzheimer's disease, but their specific effects vary considerably. Medical research has identified four genes that influence disease development.
